Gary Oldman has some Sirius qualms about the Harry Potter movies
By Bryce Olin
Did you think we got know Sirius Black well enough in the Harry Potter movies? I don't! And, apparently, Gary Oldman, who starred as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movies, doesn't think so either.
In an interview with IndieWire on the red carper for the 76th Annual Primetime Emmys, Oldman revealed that he didn't think that Sirius was in the Harry Potter movies enough.
"I love, Sirius. He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil."
Oldman was asked if he'd been in talks to return for the Harry Potter TV series, which is helmed by Francesca Gardiner and currently casting the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Oldman told IndieWire that he hadn't been approached yet, but he reiterated that his days of playing Sirius Black are over.
Naturally, Sirius will have a much bigger role in the Harry Potter TV series. We largely only see Sirius as he relates to Harry's story in the Harry Potter movies, which is a bummer. It'd be great to see more of Sirius in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as he escapes the wizard prison Azkaban, travels so far as a dog, evades the Dementors, stalks Harry (he doesn't!), and the rest of that part of the story.
Following that movie, Sirius basically disappears until the final scenes of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. It's a shame because Harry's relationship with Sirius is one of the best parts of the book. They understand each other in a way that no other characters in this series do, in my opinion. Seeing that play out before it comes to an abrupt end at the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
The Harry Potter movies have famously great casts, but keeping GARY OLDMAN on the sidelines? No, I don't like it at all.
Oldman mentioned he would play Dumbledore in the Harry Potter TV series
Oldman also offered up a few thoughts on what's going to happen with the cast of the Harry Potter TV series, but he also threw his hat in the ring to play Albus Dumbledore.
"I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people. Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore."
Actually, that's not a half-bad idea! Oldman isn't an old man yet, but he might be a little more Dumbledore-ish by the time the Harry Potter TV series premieres. According to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, the show isn't going to be released until late 2026 at the earliest, so we're more than two years away from the premiere, minimum.
Oldman isn't the only star of the Harry Potter movies not ruling out the return to the Wizarding World. Bonnie Wright, who starred as Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, recently said that she would "never say never" to coming back for the Harry Potter TV series. I'm sure other former Harry Potter actors would be more than interested in cashing whatever check Warner Bros. is willing to write for what's going to be one of the biggest TV shows ever.
