Harry Potter TV series holds open casting call for Harry, Ron, and Hermione

Are you the next Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, or Hermione Granger in the new Harry Potter TV series? Probably not, unless you're between the ages of 9 and 11 years old and from the United Kingdom and Ireland!

According to a press release from Wizarding World, the new Harry Potter TV series, based on the book series of the same name by J.K. Rowling, is officially casting the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione right now. That's right; they are looking for the next Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.

The open casting call, which was listed on Sept. 8, is run by Cast It, according to the press release. To be considered, actors must fulfill a few requirements: be aged 9-11 in April 2025 and be a citizen of the United Kingdom or Ireland.

According to the Cast It website, the casting call will be open until Oct. 31, 2024, so you only have a few weeks to submit materials. The application includes a video reading of a short story or poem and a video introduction.

Famously, Radcliffe was not cast via open casting call in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Famously, director Daniel Heyman bumped into an old friend, Alan Radcliffe, Daniel's father, at a play and asked Radcliffe to come and audition to play Harry in the movie, according to Huffington Post.

The Harry Potter TV series is in the works for Warner Bros. and HBO. The upcoming series is reported to run for a decade, according to HBO CEO Casey Bloys, according to Deadline. Production is going to start soon with a tentative release coming in 2026. Francesca Gardiner has been tapped to lead the Harry Potter TV series.

It's interesting that they list April 2025 as the date the actor must be within the age range. I'm curious if that means production will start then. I have a hard time imagining, if production starts next spring, that we will see the first season released much before the fall of 2026. That's just a little speculation for the moment, but we're expecting to learn a lot more about the Harry Potter TV series now that casting has started. It won't be long before we know who is playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione and which British stars will be joining them as Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, the Dursleys, and the many characters of the series.

We still don't know much about the Harry Potter TV series, but we should find out much more in the coming weeks. Casting starting is a very good sign! It likely means things are progressing at a promising rate.
