The Harry Potter TV series won't arrive until late 2026 at the earliest

The Harry Potter TV series is not coming to HBO and MAX anytime soon.
While speaking to Deadline after the 2024 Emmys on Sunday, Sept. 15, HBO CEO Casey Bloys revealed the Harry Potter TV series is eyeing a late 2026 or early 2027 release.
That's not outside what we've heard from Bloys in the past. Earlier this year, Bloys confirmed that the new series would not be ready until 2026. Looking at where the series is in production with casting taking place right now, it's clear that we were not going to get this series in early 2026, but it's still a bummer for fans who were hoping to see the new TV series sometime soon.
Soon, we'll find out more information, but soon, we will not see this series. That's for sure!
Bloys also revealed that he feels they are too early in the process to even talk about the airdate when asked about Harry Potter.
"Late ’26-’27. Writers are just getting started so it’s too soon to talk about airdate."
Deadline also asked Bloys when the Harry Potter TV series was filming, but Bloys gave absolutely no information away. In fact, he even cast more doubt on the rumor that the Harry Potter TV series was starting production in March. The question was referencing the open casting call and the age the actors need to be in March and April 2025.
"We haven’t announced any [date]. I think they were talking about age [the young actors] will be in March, that doesn’t mean necessarily a production start date."
Interesting! Well, suppose the Harry Potter TV series is really going to be ready for release by the end of 2026 or early 2027. In that case, production needs to start by next spring or summer. So, even though there's no date, it needs to start filming within the next nine months or so to hit that release window.
It's going to be a long wait for the new Harry Potter TV series, but hopefully, it's worth it!
In the interview, Bloys also said he's very confident in Francesca Gardiner, who is the showrunner and executive producer of the series, and Mark Mylod, who is going to be directing in addition to his role as executive producer.
Ultimately, there's a lot we still don't know about the show. We know, via Bloys, that Gardiner and the creative team are working on writing the episodes and building this world behind the scenes. We also know thanks to some recent updates that they are casting right now for the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
I would expect that the casting team is going to be reaching out to established actors to play the big roles in the series. We're talking about Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Vernon and Petunia Dursley, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, and the many other great characters who have a prominent role early in the Harry Potter story.
We'll share more news about the Harry Potter TV series as we find out!
