The Harry Potter TV series will arrive on HBO and MAX sometime in 2026 if everything goes as planned.
Will Bonnie Wright, who starred as Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, be a part of the cast? Well, she didn't turn down the possibility immediately in a new interview with PEOPLE from the "Back to Hogwarts" event in New York City on Sept. 1.
Wright was asked if she would like to be in the Harry Potter TV series, which is currently in pre-production and helmed by Francesca Gardiner, a producer of HBO's hit series, Succession.
"Never say never, never say no. I would be [open], I'm ready."
I think all actors say things like "never say never" when asked about joining TV shows and movies in interviews. It's so far out of their control, you know? Obviously, some actors have relationships with creators, directors, studios, casting directors, etc. It's still very much out of the actors' control who gets cast in these shows.
It makes sense, too, why Wright would be open to return. This magical world has changed lives, including those of the original cast. There's no doubt that the Harry Potter TV series will be one of the biggest television productions of the next decade when it finally lands on HBO and MAX.
It also makes sense why some of the original cast wouldn't want to be a part of this world. There's been a lot of controversy about Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling recently. And, many of these performers have already been there and done that with Harry Potter.
When the news about the TV series broke, I was wondering, though, just given how many British stars played major parts in the Harry Potter movies, if there would be some crossover between the movie and TV casts. It makes sense, especially given that the movies started filming 25 years ago.
Wright appeared as Ginny Weasley, Ron's sister and Harry's love interest, in all eight Harry Potter movies. She played crucial parts in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrest and the later movies, most importantly, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2.
In the Harry Potter books, though, Ginny is a much more important character. In the movies, I felt like she played a supporting role in Harry's life, but I think there's a lot more to her in the books.
Wright spoke to People about that, too, and shared that she hoped the TV series would have more time to explore the many parts of the books that were left out of the movies.
"My biggest hope as a fan of the books is that they're able to just include more of the world that we know and love. With TV shows, you've got hours unlike movies."
I think it's safe to say we're guaranteed to see more of this story, but let's just hope that the creative team gets it right, doesn't mess around, and gets right into the magic of this story in a way that keeps audiences interested in a story we've seen and read so many times before.
