Everything is starting to come together for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series!
Six adult cast members have been announced, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, but there are no rumors yet of who will play the Golden Trio.
Over 32,000 kids auditioned for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ronald Weasley, and with production set to start this summer, it’s only a matter of time before HBO reveals the faces behind them. The actors cast will have a similar journey to the original trio played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, destined to play the characters for around a decade.
While Harry Potter fans sit on pins and needles waiting for more casting announcements, the original Ginny Weasley has shared some advice with the new cast.
In an interview with People, Bonnie Wright said that while she doesn’t specifically have advice for the next Ginny or the rest of the cast, they should look to the source materials to help sculpt their performance.
“I think the not knowing and the wonder and the nervousness and the excitement and the unknown is what gives you that drive and energy,” Wright said in regards to not having advice. “I think every actor stepping into all the roles, I hope, really go from the book and they take their interpretation of the characters from the book as the original source of material."
"I just hope that they do what they wanna do and they make their character who they envision Ginny to be,” Wright continued. She further encourages the cast to enjoy their time in the wizarding world, advising them to “be present in the moment.”
Finally, she ended by suggesting the new cast members to "enjoy every minute of it."
How Ginny was written in the film adaptation is a sore point among fans, who feel the spunk and sass readers loved about the character didn’t make it to the screen, instead stripping down the character to merely be Harry's love interest. With Wright’s advice and the books in hand, whoever plays Ginny next has the tools to correct that and develop a character worthy of her on-page counterpart.
We'll share more news about the Harry Potter TV series when we find out. We should learn more about the casting process soon, especially with the cast and crew starting production sometime this summer in London. Unfortunately, it's still going to be a while until the new series premieres in late 2026 or 2027 on HBO!
Stay tuned!
