We still don't know who will be playing Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley in the upcoming Harry Potter series that will premiere in late 2026 or early 2027 on HBO. And, it's probably for a good reason: So many kids auditioned for these three roles!
According to a report from Deadline, Francesca Gardiner, who is the showrunner and executive producer of the new Harry Potter show, revealed that 32,000 children have auditioned to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the series. How they sorted through that many audition tapes, I will never know.
Last fall, an open casting call for the roles was sent out looking for 9-11-year-olds to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Well, it sounds like almost everyone in the United Kingdom sent in a video.
I'm assuming at least a few of those 32,000 kids are going to get roles in the series, even if they aren't the Chosen Ones selected to play the Trio. Harry Potter is likely to have a huge cast. There are a lot of younger roles likely available, given how many kids Harry, Ron, and Hermione share scenes and stories with at Hogwarts and beyond over the years.
Recently, Channing Dungey of Warner Bros. TV revealed to Deadline that we are close but not too close to learning who will be playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the upcoming series. "
"We are not yet ready to announce the kids, we’re still working our way through that process," Dungey said in the interview.
As we've discussed before, it makes a lot of sense why we don't know the kids yet. Production has not started yet, so there's really no reason to trot these kids out to the public before absolutely necessary. Given what's happened with kids across these major franchises, it makes a lot of sense to give them as much formal training as possible before their lives change forever. I hope that's what is happening behind the scenes as they prepare to start production on the first season later this year.
We'll let you know more about the first season of the Harry Potter TV series as we find out! We learn a little new information every week, it seems, including the new cast members, Tom Felton's role behind the scenes, the production start, and J.K. Rowling's involvement as an executive producer in the series, as well.
