There are a few actors who appeared in the Harry Potter movies taking on new roles with the upcoming Harry Potter TV series from Warner Bros. and HBO.
According to a report from The Daily Mail, Tom Felton, who starred in all eight of the Harry Potter movies as Harry's nemesis, Draco Malfoy, will be joining the Harry Potter TV series in a behind-the-scenes role. We don't know exactly what that means, but it doesn't sound like Felton will be back playing a new character in the TV series, at least not yet.
Felton has plans to sneak onto set and into a shot, though, according to a report from People.
"I'll definitely be sneaking into a background shot as an extra," he told People after also mentioning he planned on surprising the next person who will be playing Draco on set.
In addition to Felton taking a role "behind the scenes," we also know that there's another Harry Potter movie actor who will actually be playing a new character on screen in the new show. According to a report from Deadline, Paul Whitehouse will play Argus Filch in the series after having a small role as Sir Cadogan, a person in one of the moving portraits at Hogwarts during the third movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, according to CBR.
Obviously, that's a huge step up for Whitehouse, who should have a pretty prominent role in the TV series. Filch is a key part of several major stories in the first few Harry Potter books, and she's always looming when Harry is on his late-night expeditions. There's also a huge backstory for Filch that was left out of the Harry Potter movies, so it will be interesting to see how the series chooses to tackle some of those stories. I have to imagine he'll have a pretty big role as one of the first cast members announced, along with Nick Frost, who is playing Hagrid; Jon Lithgow, who is playing Albus Dumbledore; Janet McTeer, who is playing Minerva McGonagall; and Paapa Essiedu, who is playing Severus Snape.
From everything we've seen, it's highly unlikely that any of the major players from the Harry Potter movies will be taking acting roles in the series, but I'm sure cameos could be in play down the line.
We'll share more Harry Potter casting news as we find out! In a recent Deadline interview with Channing Dungey, the CEO of Warner Bros. TV, it was revealed that we're not that close to finding out who will be playing Draco, in addition to Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
Production on the new series is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, though!
