HBO just announced six members of the Harry Potter TV show cast, but none of them will be starring as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the show.
There have been casting rumors about some of the major roles for months, if not years, now. We're finally learning more stars who are joining the cast of the new Harry Potter TV series in the works from Warner Bros. and HBO. But, we're probably still quite far from learning who will be playing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the TV series.
According to a recent Deadline interview with Channing Dungey, who is the CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, we learned that Warner Bros. still hasn't picked, officially, who will be playing the Golden Trio in the Harry Potter series.
Here's what Dungey told Deadline:
"We are not yet ready to announce the kids, we’re still working our way through that process. I have to give you credit, you at Deadline are consistently breaking the news even when we’re not ready, so I feel like you are very up to speed on all things Potter in that way."
So, what is taking so long? I mean, part of it is obvious, right? We already know the actors picked to play Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall, Professor Quirrell, and Argus Filch. Those roles will be played by Jon Lithgow, Nick Frost, Paapa Essiedu, Janet McTeer, Luke Thallon, and Paul Whitehouse.
Those are all famous actors. While it's arguable if they've been a part of something as big as the Harry Potter series, they have done press before. They know how to handle, in some respect, the incredible amount of attention that is coming their way.
I don't think kids are prepared for that kind of exposure. I hope Warner Bros. is doing whoever is going to start in as Harry, Ron, and Hermione a favor in keeping them out of the limelight as long as possible.
In addition, it's possible that Warner Bros. just doesn't know yet who they want to pick to lead the series. Remember, all of those other actors have an extensive history in film, TV, and theater. It's likely that the kids, because Warner Bros. is looking for actors around 10 or 11 years old for these roles, that there's a lot more that's going to go into that search to make sure they can build the show around these three performers.
Those are my suspicions as to why Warner Bros. is confirming some of the older stars while withholding some of the younger actors so far. We all know how Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and others saw their lives change because of these roles. It's going to happen again for another group of young actors.
Ultimately, there are a lot of important characters left to be cast. Harry Potter is a sprawling story that includes dozens and dozens of important characters. It's probably going to the biggest main cast we've seen on TV in a long time, possibly since the end of Game of Thrones.
Production will be starting on the series in the summer of 2025, so we will likely learn who is playing the Golden Trio in the next few months, but it probably won't be anytime soon.
We'll continue to share casting updates for the Harry Potter TV series. Stay tuned for more news about the series!
