Actor Jared Harris makes an interesting point about the Harry Potter TV series
By Bryce Olin
The Harry Potter TV series is in full swing at HBO and MAX. HBO CEO Casey Bloys just told Deadline earlier this month that the series will probably be ready to premiere by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
Even with the excitement surrounding the series, not everyone is in favor. You can add actor Jared Harris to that list. Harris has starred in some of the biggest shows on TV, including Chornobyl, Mad Men, The Terror, and many more. He's also the son of Richard Harris, who played Albus Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
During a recent interview with The Independent, Harris was asked if he would be interested in starring as Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. Harris politely said he was not interested in the role before sharing his thoughts about the TV series.
"Also, I mean, why do it? I don’t understand. The films were fantastic – leave them alone."
I mean, he's not entirely wrong. I feel quite conflicted about the Harry Potter TV series for a number of reasons, but one of the main reasons is that it just feels like they are not necessary. Like, we've seen this all before, and recently, too.
I'm worried that the series won't be received well because it will be immediately compared to the Harry Potter movies. The movies are not without flaws, but they are quite well done. They did a great job taking Harry's story, bringing it to life, and keeping the magic. Can the Harry Potter TV series capture the same magic? I don't know.
On the other hand, Harris did mention that he thought the Harry Potter TV series could explore some of the things left out of the movies with a little more depth, according to The Independent report.
I agree with that. There will be characters who get to shine much brighter in the Harry Potter TV series than they did in the movies, including Sirius Black, Ginny Weasley, Remus Lupin, and others.
I'm still a little apprehensive that there is enough story beyond what we saw in the movies to make all of that worth it, though! I don't think remakes ruin the originals, I will say. They, to me, are independent of each other. Like, a TV series can't ruin the movies, but I do think it might feel like a waste of time.
The Harry Potter TV series is currently in pre-production, according to Bloys. Francesca Gardiner, the showrunner, and the writers are working on the episodes. And, the Harry Potter TV series is looking for actors to play Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger this fall.
Again, we're still a long way off from the Harry Potter TV series premiere! It's going to be a few years. Hopefully, I'll come around a little bit more on remaking Harry Potter's story for HBO and MAX. I'm not saying I won't change my mind, especially if it's good. There's just a lot of risk.
