With nine cast members for the Harry Potter series confirmed, including the new Golden Trio, some are starting to talk more about their forthcoming roles. John Lithgow, who will play Albus Dumbledore, was talking about his excitement to portray the character before HBO even confirmed his casting, and next to discuss their role is Nick Frost.
Frost is the new Rubeus Hagrid, the Hogwarts groundskeeper-turned-Care of Magical Creature professor who introduces Harry to the wizarding world. The late Robbie Coltrane originated the role in the film franchise and his portrayal was widely beloved by the fan base. While speaking with Collider, the actor said he doesn't plan to mimic Coltrane.
"You get cast because you're going to bring something to that. While I'm really aware of what went before me in terms of Robbie [Coltrane]'s amazing performance, I'm never going to try and be Robbie."
Frost also shared how he is going to approach the the character who is fundamentally one of the most important in Harry's life.
" I always read Hagrid as he's like a lovely, lost, violent, funny, warm child. I think the beauty of being able to do a book a season means I get to explore that a lot more, and I can't wait. He's funny! I want it to be funny and cheeky and scared and protective and childlike."
He also reveals that pre-production has begun, which should mean the series is on track to start production later this summer. Other reports and rumors indicate filming has already started, but it's unclear if Frost was involved with those scenes. According to the Collider interview, the actor revealed that he has posed for sculpts, likely for prosthetics that will be used during filming.
Those interested in seeing Frost before Harry Potter comes to screens in late 2026 or 2027 can see him as Gobber the Belch in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. He also stars alongside fellow new Harry Potter actor Dominic McLaughlin, who is set to play the titular role, in the movie Grow. The latter should allow audiences a chance to see how Frost and McLaughlin interact on-screen before they tackle Hagrid and Harry.
With additional cast announcements hopefully on the horizon, and previous cast members providing their own advice to the next generation, it's shaping up to be a magical summer. Keep your wands close as we continue to keep you informed with the latest updates on the upcoming Harry Potter series.
