Jason Isaacs doesn't think 'anything will be the same' about Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series

Former Lucius Malfoy actor Jason Isaacs believes that the newly chosen actor is really going to change up the character for the upcoming television series.

Jason Isaacs was a powerful presence in the original Harry Potter movie franchise. He played the role of Lucius Malfoy, the Slytherin father of young antagonist Draco Malfoy. He was quite obviously portrayed as an evil villain, and his presence was known right from the beginning of the first movie, and his evil aura never wavered throughout the film, or the book, for that matter.

In terms of appearance, Isaacs also stood out from the crowd with a style that became an integral part of Lucius' character. Specifically, the elder Malfoy was iconic for his long, flowing blonde hair. It set a presence about him that was distinct and memorable. But does Isaacs believe the new Malfoy actor, Johnny Flynn, will take his image, or adapt to something entirely new?

Jason Isaacs was pretty clear that he feels nothing about the new Lucius Malfoy will be the same. For one, the long blonde hair that we have come to know and love, and the way fans have been picturing the Malfoy father since the 2000s, will not be adopted by Flynn.

"Since I came up with that particular look — the hair and the cane and the capes and all that stuff — I’m pretty sure Johnny is an original thinker, and he will go in another direction. I can’t wait to see what he does.” Isaacs shared with TheWrap.

He had previously revealed that he came up with his own character design, including the wig and capes, after not approving of the original character sketches.

In fact, he feels strongly that nothing will match what he had previously adopted as his signature style, something that may be a bit jarring for some fans. “I don’t think that anything will be the same. I know they’re reinventing everything, redesigning everything.”

Just because the style will not be the same, though, does not mean Isaacs thinks Flynn was a bad choice. Quite the contrary, as it turns out.

"He’s incredibly likable, so I can’t wait for him to be obnoxious and disgusting and a terrible father," Issacs said. "I know many of the cast, and they’re all brilliant, and people who are negative about it are being idiots because it’s going to be sensational.”

Anything new is an adjustment, and many long-term fans have a very specific image and vision of their favorite characters and scenes, and it can be very hard to adapt. Change may not make it feel like Harry Potter in their mind. That could not be further from the truth, though. The fact is, no one can be exactly the same as someone else. It is impossible. Putting on their own spin is fresh and reimagines the show for the modern era.

Instead of trying to copy what happened previously, and inevitably falling short since the new actors would be portraying someone else's personal style, Warner Bros. is deciding to take a new approach, at least in terms of casting and style. They do stand by their word that it will be a faithful adaptation of the original novels in terms of storyline, and with enough seasons to cover every book, the show should be more detailed than the movie franchise was able to accomplish.

Overall, there is a lot to be excited about for the highly anticipated Harry Potter show on Max. Hopefully, the execution lives up to the hype! Just prepare yourself for new looks, new actors, and a new way to experience the story we all know and love.
