Fantasy Advent Day 2: We know when You-Know-Who and the Boy Who Lived are coming to television
By Kaki Olsen
Welcome back to the Fantasy Advent 2024. We are coming to Hogwarts early in the run, thanks to some news on the entertainment front that just came out today. There is no doubt that Harry Potter has made its mark as a film franchise. Within four years of the first book's release, we saw Daniel Radcliffe bring the titular role to life. Eight films were released in total, since one film could not contain the story of Lord Voldemort's eventual defeat. Many people consider the adaptations to be good as is and they make some good arguments. Many others, however, welcome the news that a television series will bring us back to Platform 9 3/4. And as of today, we ave more infromation on when that will be happening.
Revised Schedule
We've known for some time that the series would be handled by HBO. We've heard that they may be bringing in Framestore to work on visual effects and while there are still rumors about Mark Rylance playing Dumbledore, we know that Jared Harris won't be stepping into his father's shoes to play Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.
The update from the Film Updates social media account announces that "HGO's 'HARRY POTTER' series is eyeing a 2027 premiere. The accompanying picture is perfect. Ron looks enthusiastic, Harry looks cautiously optimistic, and Hermione is giving the Muggle camera a side-eyed look of mild suspicion.
This is not the first time the schedule has been revised and many fans are beginning to wonder what the hold-up is. One explanation is that the major roles have not been announced yet It was just three years ago that an open casting call was announced. It's reported that the actor must be at least 9 years old by April 2025, so this might give u an insight for when filming might begin.
The significant amount of VFX that is required is another obvious factor. Framestore already has worked on the films of both Harry Potter and Newt Scamander and won Academy Awards for thier work on two other films. THat kind of quality, especially on the small screen, takes time.
We also have yet to know if HBO's previously-reported plans to film the first two seasons in a short amount of time will go forward. Once the showrunners find their perfect casting, they will be tasked with working to bring out the best in the young actors.
We look forward to many more updates for now and can wait for a truly magical adaptation.
