I know Quidditch is not the most interesting aspect of the Harry Potter movies, but it is an important part of Harry's life, his connection with his father, and what keeps his life interesting during the long school year. And, we need to see much more Quidditch in the Harry Potter TV series.
It's obvious, despite being such an important of the books, why most of Harry's Quidditch career was cut in the Harry Potter movies. It takes a lot of time to show a Quidditch match, and it's probably one of the more expensive aspects of the films, considering how much CGI is required.
Thanks to a great Reddit thread, it looks like the movies only feature about 18 minutes of Quidditch over all eight movies. Almost half of that happens in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. We need more than that in the TV series. We need to see Harry enjoying his life and trying to find balance in the hectic schedule of a Hogwarts student, instead of trying to stop Dark Wizards the whole time. The TV series has the time to do that, and they should use it wisely.
Quidditch is a major part of the story in all but two of the books. As you'll recall, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire only features Quidditch at the very beginning with Harry joins the Weasleys at the Quidditch World Cup. They don't play that season because Harry is competing in the Tri-Wizard Tournament with Cedric Diggory. Then, of course, Harry doesn't play Quidditch in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows because he's busy-busy.
There are a few reasons why the new Harry Potter TV series should include more Quidditch. First of all, it's fun! Readers and viewers love Quidditch. On top of that, it's so important to who Harry was and it helps break up this story and show how much time actually passes during each of Harry's year at Hogwarts.
There are so many chapters in the book that focus on Harry playing in matches and training with the Gryffindor side. Those are some of the most exciting and fun chapters in the books because it's such a huge part of Harry's life, but it's small potatoes compared to the other things he's facing. It builds tension in a good way for readers.
And, it's not just about Harry having fun and being a kid. Growing up with the Dursleys, Harry doesn't have much connection to his parents. When Harry learns that his father was also a good Quidditch player, the game means that much more to him.
Other chapters feature Harry just thinking about the upcoming matches and trying to balance the game with his schoolwork and the mystery he, Ron, and Hermione are trying to solve. It's a huge omission, especially in the later movies. So many things happen late at night because Harry missed study time because of Quidditch. We need to see those moments.
I don't know that it would be a good thing to see every Quidditch match, but we should see clips of Harry winning Quidditch matches, winning the Quidditch Cup, training and spending time with his team, and enjoying his time at Hogwarts.
While I do think we get a sense of that in the movies, the books provide a much more in-depth look into Harry's entire school year. That time passing is so important in the books. I'm excited that we'll get to see some of the small things that helped shape the person that Harry was during his time at Hogwarts.
We want more Quidditch. Hopefully, we'll see when the Harry Potter TV series premieres in 2026.
