Get a look at the bowtruckles we’ll see in Fantastic Beasts
We have new info and new images of bowtruckles, a magical creature we’ll be encountering in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Yesterday, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them released a new featurette focusing on Newt Scamander and his trip to America, where the events of our movie will occur. We got our first real shot of Tina Goldstein and her prejudices against non magical people, which was a little shocking. We also got to meet Jacob and his big booming personality.
And we also got out first look at yet a another Beast that will be part of the films. So far we’ve seen the Swooping Evil, which is a creature we;d never heard of before. We also saw the Niffler, a creature which appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire–but only the book version. Now we have a new creature to meet–again one that was in the Harry Potter books, but got cut out of the movie.
Meet: the bowtruckle.
This tiny little sticklike green creature standing on the back of Newt’s hand and blowing him a raspberry is first introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as Harry, Hermione and Ron find themselves dealing with on during an Herbology class. According to the Harry Potter Wiki:
The Bowtruckle can be found in western England, southern Germany, and certain Scandinavian forests. A Bowtruckle serves as a tree guardian for its home tree, which is usually a tree whose wood is ofwand quality (such as Wiggentree). The twig-like fingers are well adapted for digging out wood lice in trees, and can also be used as a weapon against a foe when aimed at the eyes. It is generally a peaceful creature, but will become violent if anything threatens its tree, or even to itself. To take leaves or wood from a Bowtruckle’s tree, one would have to offer it wood lice or fairy eggs as a distraction
This, it should be noted is the second creature the movie has used that appears in the books but was cut from the on-screen version. I’m curious if that’s due to not wanting to have to match the CGI of ten years ago, or if that’s just because Rowling was sorry though creatures were left on the cutting room floor during the transition from page to screen. Either way, it’s another creature we can ad to our list of those we will be getting to know better come this November.
